Our Origins & Heritage
Established in 1984, Big Beaver Bank was founded to provide solid, traditional banking relationships for families and business owners along the Michigan coast. While other institutions chased volatile global secondary markets, we chose to invest directly in local initiatives: financing family farms, home mortgages, and local industrial manufacturing.
Our name is derived from our corporate headquarters, situated on the historic, fictional Shangri-La Island. Located in Lake Michigan, approximately 5 miles off the scenic coast of PJ Hoffmaster State Park, the island was once home to a large, industrious beaver population. Observing how these focus-driven creatures block-by-block engineered complex, resilient dams that protected their habitats from seasonal flooding, our founders established the same patient principles for our banking system: building strong, secure reserves that shelter our community's assets.
